Alcudia beach in winter

Low season in the North of Mallorca

Palma airport welcomed almost 30 million passengers in 2019. It handles more than a thousand flights a day in the height of summer.

By the end of October, weary workers pack away the sunbeds. Many of the bars and restaurants close for the year only to reopen again in April. It’s a shame because many people don’t know what they’re going to be missing.

The sun does not suddenly disappear when the masses leave. Ask many residents when their favourite time of the year is and you might hear this, ‘Winter! The weather’s great and it feels like we have the island to ourselves.’

Read on to find out more about why the winter, spring or autumn could be the best time to plan your break trip in Mallorca. Let us help you plan your trip.

The Seasons

The island boasts around 300 days of sunshine every year. So, what’s the weather like in Mallorca during the winter? There are plenty of bright, sunny days with temperatures often well into the mid teens. Of course, there can be wet, gloomy days but these tend to be the exception rather than the rule. It’s a lottery.

We’ve celebrated Christmas many times over the past few years with a long family lunch on the terrace. When the sun goes down, it does get chilly but the days are still longer than in the north of Europe. There’s just more light.

Spring and Autumn are short. One of the biggest differences between Winter and Summer is  the temperature at night. It can plummet in the evening in January but then be warm enough to wear just a t-shirt during the day. In Summer it’s just hot all day and all night. Mucho calor!

Things to Do in the Cooler Months

Holidays are precious and it’s a good idea to plan carefully so that you use them wisely. Cycling and hiking are popular but one sport does not need to preclude the other. If you’re not at competition level, then take it easy and try both.

You don’t need to be Bradley Wiggins to cycle in Mallorca. In fact, in some ways it is better to be less focused on your bike and more mindful of the countryside around you.

See Mallorca’s Wild Flowers

Take in the scent of the white-pink, almond flowers. There are around seven million almond trees in full bloom on Mallorca between January and early March. Meadows look like a painter’s palette as wild flowers such as the yellow oxalis take over the island.

Brooks will be bubbling as they criss-cross some of the narrow country lanes. See Mallorca’s countryside at its prettiest over the cooler months. This is when the grass is green, the lambs are gamboling and the views are as pretty as a postcard.

Spring Is the Best Time for Bird Watching

The most exciting time for bird-watching in Mallorca is in April and May. This is when thousands of birds pass over the island on their way from Africa, stopping off for a rest and a bite to eat before they head to mainland Europe.

There are two favourite spots to watch the birds that are close to Alcúdia and Pollensa in the north of Mallorca. These are S’Albufera Natural Park and S’Albufereta Natural reserve but you mustn’t miss the cliffs of Formentor too.

The best time of day is early in the morning. You’ll be able to see favourites such as Black Vultures, Eleonora’s Falcons, Moustached Warblers and Balearic Shearwaters. You might also catch a glimpse of  Little Bitterns, Squacco Herons and Great White Egrets.

Writing, Painting and Yoga Retreats

The British poet and writer Robert Graves found peace in Mallorca. This was after years of psychological turmoil following his experiences during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

‘The Mallorcan countryside is..admirable for people whose minds already teem with ideas that need recording in absolute quiet,’ he said. “I found everything I wanted as a writer: sun, sea, mountains, spring water, shady trees, no politics and a few civilised luxuries.”

Pollensa has attracted a host of writers and artists over the years. Groups of painters meet every week at Club Pollensa on the town square. The available light and stunning views make the north of Mallorca an attractive place for artists to come and find inspiration.

The peace, tranquility and fresh air can be the ideal backdrop to unlock ideas for creative writing. This is a place to relax and be mindful. Take a yoga retreat and return home refreshed and invigorated.
